Bulbophyllum squamiplectum J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel, Lankesteriana 20(3) (2020) 327, fig. 17

Type: Brass 10794 (holo L).

Medium-size patent to pendulous epiphyte to 30 cm long. Roots attaching the base of the plant to the substratum, growing over the rhizome towards its base. with patent to pendulous, sparsely branched rhizomes over which the roots grow towards its base. Rhizome sparsely branched, 0.14–0.3 cm diam., new shoot from the basal node of the pseudobulb; rhizome scales thin, rather persistent. Pseudobulbs distinct, 0.4–0.8 cm apart, ellipsoid(-rectangular) to (ob-)ovoid(-rectangular), 0.7–1.5 by 0.4–0.7 cm, 3-angular, deeply concave on the side where the new shoot arises. Leaf: petiole 0.18–0.25 cm long; blade probably somewhat succulent but dorsoventrally flattened, elliptic to ovate, 1.6–3.2 by 0.6–1.5 cm, index 1.7–4.2; apex acute. Inflorescences clustered from the basal node of the pseudobulbs, 1–2 cm long, 1-flowered; peduncle 0.3–0.6 cm long; scales 1; floral bracts c. 0.38 cm long. Flowers: pedicel and ovary c. 0.3 cm long; basal node c. 0.15 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal free, recurved, ovate, 0.58–0.82 by 0.17–0.22 cm, index 3.2–3.8; margins entire; apex acuminate; glabrous, 3-nerved. Lateral sepals free, recurved, ovate-triangular, 0.78–0.8 by 0.19–0.24 cm, index 3.3–4.2; margins entire; apex acuminate; glabrous, 3-nerved. Petals porrect, elliptic to ovate, 0.16–0.21 by 0.11–0.13 cm, index 1.4–1.7; margins entire, ciliate; apex obtuse to acute; surface glabrous; 1-nerved. Lip slightly recurved, very thick, oblong, 0.18–0.2 by 0.09–0.12 cm, index 1.6–2.2 (without spreading); margins entire; apex truncate; upper side concave near the base, with two narrow ridges which start near the base, close to the margin, then converge slightly over the upper surface up to about half-way the length of the lip, top part of the lip slightly concave, with a wide glandular-papillose patch along the median line, towards the base this patch divides into two, lining the inner surface of the ridges, upper surface otherwise glabrous; underside convex, only slightly furrowed along the median line, surface glabrous. Column including stelidia 0.1–0.12 cm long; column foot at the top widened, triangular; stigma obovate; stelidia upwards falcate, triangular, c. 0.06 cm long, acute; pollinia 4, the inner two more than half as long as the outer.

Bulbophyllum squamiplectum J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel belongs in series C.

Within series C, Bulbophyllum squamiplectum J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel is unique in the glandular-papillose patch along the median line on the upper side of the lip.

Bulbophyllum squamiplectum J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel is similar to Bulbophyllum radula J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel in general habit but the leaves are much less succulent, flat and elliptic to ovate (versus succulent, semi-terete with the upper side flattened, ovate in outline) and the glandular-papillose patch along the median line on the upper side of the lip (versus upper side of the lip glabrous).
