Rather small epiphyte. Roots spreading. Rhizome creeping, 0.18–0.25 cm diam., new shoot from the basal node of the pseudobulb; rhizome scales thin, somewhat persistent. Pseudobulbs 0.1–0.9 cm apart, distinct, ovoid(- cylindrical), 1.1–2.1 by 0.4–0.7 cm; apex hardly angular. Leaf: petiole 0.5–1.3 cm long; blade obovate, 3.0–7.0 by 0.5–0.9 cm, index 5.0–12.8; apex obtuse. Inflorescences single or several together, 5–8 cm long, 1-flowered; peduncle 1.8–3.3 cm long; scales c. 2, basal; floral bracts 0.4–0.7cm long. Flowers: pedicel and ovary 2.1–3.6 cm long; basal node 0.26–0.4 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal free, recurved, ovate(-triangular), 0.9–1.1 by 0.25–0.3cm, index 3.2–3.7; margins entire, glabrous to minutely papillose; surface glabrous; apex acute; 3-nerved. Lateral sepals free, recurved, (ovate-)triangular, 0.8–1.2 by 0.22–0.35 cm, index 3.0–4.6; margins glabrous; apex acute; 3-nerved. Petals porrect, ovate-triangular, 0.26–0.32 by 0.1–0.19 cm, index 1.6–3.0; margins entire, minutely papillose; surface glabrous; apex obtuse; 1-nerved. Lip slightly recurved near base, elliptic, 0.75–0.9 by 0.18–0.22 cm, index 3.7–4.5 (without spreading); margins entire, densely hirsute near the base, glabrous in the top half; apex rounded to obtuse; thick; upper side concave close to the base, this cavity bordered by two short, converging ridges with a glabrous crest, upper surface otherwise about flat and with two densely hirsute patches towards the margins in the basal 2/5–1/2 of its length, slightly convex and glabrous elsewhere; underside slightly convex near the base, slightly concave elsewhere; surface glabrous. Column including stelidia 0.16–0.23 cm long; column foot at the top widened, with spreading, obtuse lateral teeth; stigma about circular, near the base distinctly protruding from the column face; stelidia sigmoid, narrowly triangular, 0.08–0.13 cm long, the top part subulate, acute; pollinia 4, the inner two more than half as long as the outer.

Bulbophyllum schistopogon J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel belongs in series B.

Bulbophyllum schistopogon J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel shares the distribution of hairs on the upper side of the lip with Bulbophyllum subium J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel, B. galliaheneum Van Royen, and with B. odontopetalum Schltr.; it differs in the much longer, sigmoid stelidia (versus short and upturned stelidia) and the acute sepals (versus sepals long acuminate).

Bulbophyllum schistopogon J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel is in general shape similar to Bulbophyllum dischorense Schltr. and B. dschischungarense Schltr., it differs in the presence of hairy patches on the upper side of the lip.
