Dendrobium goodallianum

Dendrobium goodallianum de Vogel, E. Winkel & Vugt, Males. Orch. J. 14 (2014) 87

Type: Leiden cult. 20031898 (E.F. de Vogel & A.P.T.M. Vogel) (holotype LAE, isotype L).

Epiphyta. Roots white, glabrous, few-branched, terete, to 0.3 cm diam. Rhizome short. Stems few, erect, rather crowded, elongated, not branched, terete, above in cross-section elliptic, to 156 cm long, some stems after a growth period continuing growth from the terminal bud with a new shoot with at the basal node a bunch of additional roots like the normal roots; internodes 1.5–4.5 by 0.4 cm, those at base of stem shortest. Leaves sheathing; tubular, not compressed, faintly ribbed, shorter than the internodes, with a small rounded appendage appressed to the internode opposite the leaf-blade; leaf blade sessile, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 2.5–11 by 0.8–1.8 cm, index 3-6; thin, rather stiff; apex acute. Inflorescence developing laterally from the stem on the bare part of the internode directly below the next node, very short, 2-flowered; spathe consisting of obliquely triangular scale-leaves of which the outer ones are somewhat falcate, c. 0.4 by 0.4 cm, with blunt apex; peduncle c. 0.9 cm long. Pedicel and ovary 0.9–1.1 cm long, slender, smooth and glabrous. Flowers c. 5 cm across. Median sepal linear-triangular, very gradually tapering to the apex, c. 3.4 by 0.45 cm; base 9-nerved; apex acute. Lateral sepals linear-triangular, slightly falcate, very gradually tapering to the apex, c. 3.1 by 0.7 cm; apex acute; base 9-nerved; mentum slightly curved, broad, c. 0.5 cm long, broadly obtuse. Petals linear, falcate, c. 2.8 by 0.3 cm; base 3-nerved, lateral nerves just above base branching twice; apex acute. Lip 3-lobed, strongly recurved, when flattened c. 1.15 cm long; hypochile c. 0.9 by 0.7 cm including the lateral lobes, along the median with a straight, broad, flattened, glabrous keel which terminates at the base of the midlobe in one or a few thick, short papillae; lateral lobes in front porrect, ligulate, obliquely truncate, c. 0.35 by 0.18 cm, with irregular lower margin and apex, inside sparsely thick-papillose up to the base of the midlobe; midlobe ovate, c. 0.6 by 0.5 cm; margins deeply laciniate, laciniae ribbon-like, some slightly widened and apically notched, each provided with a vein, c. 0.08 cm long; apex narrowly triangular; longitudinal nerves 3, with scattered, long, sometimes branched hair-like appendages mainly along the nerves. Column in lateral view oblique, straight, c. 0.4 by 0.3 cm, c. 0.3 cm wide; clinandrium with broadly rounded lateral lobules and a small narrow filament; stigma semi-elliptic; column-foot at right angles to the ovary, gently curved, c. 0.45 by 2.8 mm, rather thick, with slightly raised margins, shallowly grooved at apex. Anther cucullate, in outline narrowly trapeziform, c. 0.15 by 0.15 cm; apex broad, truncate, slightly retuse; pollinia oblong, laterally compressed, convex outside, the inner ones narrower.
(after de Vogel et al. 2014)

,Exposed parts of stems moss green, Leaf sheath dull dark red-brown, turning straw coloured when the blade falls off; leaf blade green, at the base and top and adaxially on margin and midrib tinged brownish purple. Flowers creamy-white, petals in basal half except the very base light lilac; mentum pale lilac; lip base yellowish; median keel towards the base of the lip violet; sweetly fragrant of coconut.

Riverine forest, rather disturbed, along stream, in fairly exposed position. Altitude c. 450 m.

Malesia (Papua New Guinea), endemic. See map

Papua New Guinea (Oro Prov.)

Warm growing epiphyte, tolerates exposure to sunshine which results in stronger red- brown coloration of the leaves.

In cultivation in Leiden March–June.

Dendrobium goodallianum de Vogel, E. Winkel & Vugt. resembles Dendrobium laceratum Schltr., but differs in the presence of papillae on the hypochile, and in having scattered, long, sometimes branched, hair-like appendages on the nerves of the midlobe instead of a median band of densely set, recurved, subulate papillae

This species is named in honour of Dame Jane Morris Goodall, a biologist best known for her work with Chimpanzees. At present she is still very active promoting nature conservation across many countries and all generations. In 2013, together with Gail Hudson, she published the book Seeds of Hope, in which an entire chapter is dedicated to the conservation of orchids.

The drawing of this species by Esmee Winkel for the Malesian Orchid Journal was part of a series of drawings which was awarded a gold medal at the Botanical Images Scotia exhibition in Edinburgh (BISCOT) in 2012.
