Synonyms:
Epiphytes. Rhizome 0.35–0.6 cm diam.; rhizome scale leaves not long persistent, hardly any fibers remaining. Pseudobulbs 1.5–4.0 cm apart, distinct, (obliquely) erect, ovoid, 2.0–3.8 by 1.0–1.6 cm, rounded in section, with age wrinkling with numerous longitudinal grooves. Leaf petiole 2.0–4.0 cm long; blade elliptic-oblong to obovate-oblong, 8.2–16.0 by 1.4–2.8 cm, index 3.9–6.7; apex acute to acuminate. Inflorescences 3–7 cm long, solitary to many in a fascicle, 1-flowered; peduncle 1.3–3 cm long; scale leaves 4–5, the longest 0.35–0.5 cm long; floral bracts 0.35–0.55 cm long. Pedicel and ovary 1.6–3 cm long; basal node c. 0.32 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal free, c. porrect to recurved, obovate, 0.75–0.95 by c. 0.45 cm, index 2.1–2.2, thin; margins entire; apex slightly emarginate; glabrous; 5-nerved. Lateral sepals as the median sepal but recurved, oblique, elliptic to oblong, 0.74–0.82 by 0.35–0.5 cm, index 1.6–2.2; apex obtuse to subacute; 4-nerved. Petals near their base adnate to the column, porrect, ovate-oblong, 0.28–0.3 by 0.05–0.06 cm, index 4.6–6.0, thin; margins entire; apex acute(-acuminate); glabrous; 1-nerved. Lip slightly above halfway recurved, apical part (slightly) incurved, in outline obovate, in lateral view slightly auriculate, c. 0.5 by 0.34 cm, index 1.4–1.5 (without spreading), thick; margins entire, ciliolate, its surface glabrous; above towards the base hardly concave, and with 2 low, rounded calli, the depression in between these continuing as a shallow furrow up to about halfway the length of the lip, apical part distinctly convex; below with a median ridge with a more or less flattened crest in the basal half, apical half concave; apex rounded. Column including stelidia 0.25–0.28 cm long; column foot not widened at the apex; stelidia porrect, triangular, 0.1–0.11 cm long, acute, upper margin entire or slightly erose; anther on underside with a rather narrow, rounded ridge, front drawn-out into a rather thick, slightly concave, ovate, obtuse beak, its surface minutely papillose; pollinia 4, inner pair slightly shorter than the outer pair

Bulbophyllum gunteri is most similar to Bulbophyllum phaeoglossum Schltr. and Bulbophyllum pterodon; it differs from B. phaeoglossum by having ciliolate lip margins, from B. pterodon in the petals which are distinctly less than half the length of the median sepal (versus more than half as long as the median sepal) and by the absence of a distinct, obtuse wing along the upper margin of the stelidia
