Habenaria stenopetala was recorded for the first time for New Guinea by Schuiteman & Wanma (2017). They express doubt if H. stenopetala Lindl. var. polytricha Hook.f. (= H. pantlingiana Kraenzl.) can be upheld as a distinct species
