Dendrobium matapense Ormerod, Checkl. Papuasian Orch. (2017) 227, 485 (fig.).

Type: Hoover 735 (holo A).

Epiphytes. Roots slender, terete.0.03-0.05 cm thick. Stems slender, weakly thickened above, weakly to moderately flexuous, to 25 cm long, 0.05-0.35 cm thick when dry, branching up to 8 times or more; branches 2-19 cm long. Leaves ovate to ovate-oblong, rather stiff when dry, 0.8-1.6 by 0.3-0.62 cm; margins cellular dentate; apex mucronate. Inflorescences subterminal, on leafy and leafless stems, 0.4-0.7 cm long; peduncle 0.2-0.3 cm long; rhachis subcapitate, densely 4-9 flowered, 0.2-0.4 cm long; floral bracts lanceolate, c. 0.45 cm long, margin cellular denticulate, with acute apex, 3-nerved. Pedicel and ovary narrowly club-shaped, 1.15-1.5 cm long. Median sepal oblong-lanceolate, 3-nerved, 0.5 by 0.2 cm, with acute apex. Lateral sepals joined at the base for. 0.4 cm, free part ovate; midnerve keeled in upper third; apex subacuminate; 5-nerved, 0.57 (along top margin) to 1.4 (along lower margin) by 0.45 cm; mentum narrowly oblong-conical, with obtuse apex, 0.8 cm long. Petals rhombic-ligulate, 0.57 by 0.15 cm; upper margin minutely cellular-dentate; apex acute; 1-nerved. Lip ligulate-oblanceolate, 1.3 by 0.31 cm, below the middle with a forward-pointing, transverse lamella; hypochile oblong, 0.5 by 0.2 cm, 3-5-nerved; epichile oblanceolate-rhombic, 0.8 mby0.31 cm, upper margin minutely erose-papillose, apex subacute, 5-nerved. Column semiterete, c. 0.22 cm long; column foot c. 0.8 cm long.

Flowers violet purple, vivid purple or purple with lower part of lip orange-red.

Epiphytes low on trunks in mossy forest, also frequent on mossy undergrowth of Podocarpus trees in Oak forest. Altitude 1550-1800 m.

Distribution: Malesia, Papua New Guinea, endemic.

Papua New Guinea (Milne Bay Prov.).

Intermediate growing epiphyte.

Dendrobium limpidum subsp. daunceyae differs from Dendrobium limpidum subsp. limpidum in the parallel-sided, narrower, 0.3-0.6 cm wide leaves (versus obliquely ovate, 0.7-1 cm wide), and the 3-nerved petals (versus 1-nerved).

Dendrobium limpidum subsp. daunceyae is named after Elizabeth (Liz) A. Dauncey, who wrote a revision of Dendrobium section Pedilonum.
