Dendrobium hoftii Ormerod is similar to D. polyschistum Schltr. in the shape of the mentum and column foot, and the oblong-elliptic cavity near its apex, but differs in the broader, 0.5 cm wide leaves (versus 0.15-0.25 cm wide), flowers with a longer, 0.8 cm long mentum (versus 0.5 cm), and a triangular lip epichile (versus transversely rhombic).

Dendrobium hoftii Ormerod is named after Robert Höft, collector of the type.

Clemens 12105 probvably belongs to this species but has slightly wider leaves, and longer basal inflorescence scales; these measurements are not included in the description.
