Dendrobium awormangae Ormerod, Checkl. Papuasian Orch. (2017) 173, 468 (fig.).

Type: NGF 20386 (van Royen) (holo A; iso BO, BRI, CANB, HAW, K, L, LAE, NSW, SlNG).

Probably terrestrials. Rhizome not seen. Roots terete, 0.08 cm thick. Stems erect but apical parts lax and curving downwards, semi-elliptic in section, laxly leafy, occasionally emitting roots, reported 150 cm long, fragment 34 by 0.25 cm; exposed part of internodes 0.5-1.5 cm long. Leaves narrowly lanceolate, thin, 4.2-7.2 by 0.45-0.6 cm; leaf sheath tubular, finely striate, smooth, 1.5-2.7 cm long, its apex with a triangular, acute, 0.2 cm long lobe; apex unequally lobed, lobes 2, minute, obtuse, differing to 0.21 cm in length; faintly 3-nerved. lnflorescence 2-flowered; basal inflorescence scales: 1st transversely oblong, 0.1 by 0.3 cm, 2nd oblong, 0.55 by 0.25-0.27 cm, with obtuse apex; 3rd thin and papery, 0.45-0.6 by 0.1 cm, with acute apex; peduncle 0.6 cm long. Pedicel and ovary club-shaped, 0.9 cm long. Median sepal linear-lanceolate; apex acute; 7-nerved, 5 by 0.39 cm. Lateral sepals obliquely narrowly triangular in basal third, linear above; 9-nerved, 5 by 0.8 cm; mentum obtuse, 0.5 cm long. Petals linear-lanceolate; apex acute; 5-nerved, 5 by 0.16 cm. Lip weakly 3-lobed, 1,23 cm long; hypochile widening to halfway from a narrow base, 0.55 by 0.74 cm with 2 plate-like keels, lateral lobes ligulate-lanceolate , 0.25 cm long with its outer margins entire or irregularly dentate and its apex 1- or 2-dentate; epichile ovate, 0.68 by 0.58 cm, its margin irregularly low dentate, each marginal tooth usually ending in a subulate to club-shaped hair, its surface with sparsely scattered processes, keels present only on the base of the epichile, continuing from those of the hypochile but much lower, beyond the midnerve is unadorned but flanked on each lateral nerve by a row of dentate to sublamellate processes with acute apex, in upper half of the epichile the midnerve carries a row of club-shaped processes. Column obliquely conical, the lower margin with an obscure, obtuse lobule about midway along each side, 0.42 cm long (without anther); column foot gently curved, 0.4 cm long.

Stems often dark purple, glossy. Leaves bright green. Flowers bright purple, tips yellowish-white.

Probably terrestrials in Ericacea-Myrtaceae shrubbery around dry, open summit. Altitude 2835 m.

Dendrobium awormangae Ormerod is similar to D. gibbosum Gilli but differs in the much longer sepals (5 cm versus 2.5-3 cm), the lanceolate, bifid lateral lobes of the lip (versus acuminate), and an ornamentation consisting of variously shaped projections on the midlobe of the lip (versus club-shaped papillae on the nerves).
