Corybas finisterreanus S.P.Lyon, Malesian Orchid J. 18 (2016) 100, fig. 19-21.
Type: S.P. Lyon SPL 437 (holo LAE, iso L).
Synonyms:
Terrestrial herb. Tuberoid ovoid to slightly fusiform, 0.5–0.7 by 0.4–0.5 cm. Stem slightly angular, 0.09 cm long; basal sheath 0.3 cm long; apex acute, subulate. Leaf sessile, cordate with well-developed auricles, 0.7–0.9 by 0.5 cm, glabrous; margins undulate; apex acute, apiculate; nerves reticulate, with two lateral nerves on either side of the midrib, the outermost extending most of the way to the apex before anastomosing with inner lateral veins. Peduncle less than 0.1 cm long. Floral bract linear-lanceolate, 0.5–0.6 cm long. Pedicel and ovary cylindrical, 0.4 cm long, ridged. Flower solitary, upright. Median sepal broadly obovate, 2.3–3,1 by 0.7–1.1 cm; apex broadly rounded and hooded over lip; nerves 5 at the base, variously branching and anastomosing towards apex, midrib weakly crested. Lateral sepals filiform, slightly curved, 0.8–1.1 cm long, emerging from behind spurs and typically pointing outwards to the sides of flower. Petals forward pointing, filiform, 0.35 cm long. Lip from the tubular basal part in the ventral part of the tube inflated and laterally compressed, abruptly curved downward and spreading into a 0.6 cm wide, deltoid–ovate blade which is c. 1 cm long when flattened out; inner surface of blade pubescent; margins recurved and minutely fimbriate; apex broadly acute; opening to the floral tube deeply notched; spurs triangular, 0.2 cm long. Column erect, 0.3 by 0.2 cm; ventral pad slightly 3-lobed, 0.15 by 0.2 cm. Fruit not seen.
(after Lyon 2016)
Leaf greyish green with pink midrib and margins above, flushed pink below. Floral bract reddish. Median sepal white on outer surface, inside red. Lateral sepals white with red tips. Petals white. Outer surface of lip tube white at the base, red in the central part on the sides of tube; spurs white; inner surface of blade pink shading to red at the apex. Column whitish green with irregular red markings. Pedicel and ovary reddish.
Terrestrial in leaf litter and moss under stunted montane vegetation, on relatively exposed ridges. Altitude c. 1800–2000 m.
Malesia (New Guinea, endemic).
Papua New Guinea (Morobe Prov.). See map
Cool growing terrestrial.
January.
Corybas finisterreanus is similar to C. umbonatus Schltr. in the enlarged, broadly rounded median sepal, but differs in the wide, deeply notched opening to the tube of the lip and the absence of the large, shield-like boss (versus present), and the shorter lateral sepals which are c. 3 times as long as the petals (versus 6 times as long).
Corybas finisterreanus is also very similar to C. cymatilis P. Royen, but differs in the densely pubescent lip (versus glabrous), nerves on the median sepal that are only weakly crested, and the lip being darkest red at the apex (versus white at the apex), leaves light greyish green (versus very dark blue green), and median sepal essentially all white (versus with purple–red ribs).
