Appendicula goodenoughiana Ormerod, Malesian Orchid J. 13 (2014) 46, fig. 5.

Type: L.J. Brass 25071 (holo AMES).

Epiphytic herb. Rhizome short. Roots terete, pubescent, 0.03–0.07 cm thick. Stems caespitose, terete, leafy throughout, lower half to third shedding older leaves, eventually becoming leafless, 13.0–17.5 by up to 0.05 cm thick, to 0.12 cm wide across the sheaths. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, 1.1–1.5 by 0.22–0.37 cm; leaf sheaths tubular, smooth, with prominent nerves when dry, the apex opposite the leaf lamina deeply U-shaped to a depth of 0.15 cm, exposed part of sheaths 0.3–0.5 cm long; apex triaristate. Inflorescence pseudoterminal to subterminal, 1.7–1.8 cm long; peduncle 0.5–0.7 cm long; sheaths if present subfoliaceous, 1.05 by 0.3 cm; rachis densely but successively-flowered, 1–1.3 cm long; floral bracts ovate to ovate-lanceolate, with acute apex, 3-nerved, 0.25–0.45 by 0.16–0.2 cm. Pedicel and ovary clavate, 0.25–0.27 cm long. Median sepal elliptic; midnerve low keeled; apex obtuse, 0.24 by 0.14 cm. Lateral sepals broadly obliquely ovate, 0.3 by 0.275 cm (0.275 cm long along midnerve); apex obtuse; midnerve low keeled; mentum subquadrate, 0.18–0.2 cm long. Petals oblong-oblanceolate, basal c. 0.05 cm joined to column, free part 0.18 by 0.08 cm; apex obtuse. Lip obovate-obtrullate, 0.28 by 0.22 cm; callus elliptic-subcalceolate at the base, retrorse, fleshy, continuing onto the disc as 2 parallel keels with subsigmoid apices; apex obtuse; 3-nerved. Column short, obliquely erect, 0.15 cm long to tip of rostellum; column foot incurved, c. 0.1 cm long.


Flowers white.

Low on trees in moist ravine. Atitude 800 m.


Malesia, New Guinea, endemic.

Papua New Guinea, Milne Bay Prov., Goodenough Island.

Warm intermediate growing epiphyte.

Appendicula goodenoughiana is similar to A. fallax but differs in the smaller leaves, the shorter median sepal, oblong-oblanceolate petals (versus oblong-ligulate), the shorter mentum (0.18–0.2 versus 0.3 cm), and the smaller lip (0.28 by 0.22 versus 0.55 by 0.33 cm).
