Type: L.J. Brass 10981 (holo AMES).

Terrestrial herb. Roots terete, pubescent, to 0.2 cm thick. Pseudobulbs very short, 2(-3?) leaved. Leaves obliquely oblong-elliptic; petiole 3.5-5.5 cm long, blade 13.6-15 by 4.6--4.7 cm; apex subacuminate. Inflorescence pubescent, 36.3 cm long; peduncle 28.5 by 0.25-0.3 cm; sheathing bracts 1.2-2.0 cm long; rachis sublaxly 15-25 flowered, 7.8 cm long. Floral bracts lanceolate, to 0.9 cm long; apex acute. Pedicel and ovary clavate, pubescent, 0.8-0.9 cm long. Median sepal ovate-elliptic, 0.6 by 0.37 cm; apex obtuse; 3-nerved. Lateral sepals cymbiform, elliptic, 0.6 by 0.29-0.3 cm; apex subacute; 3-nerved. Petals obliquely oblanceolate, 0.55-0.62 by 0.2-0.22 cm; apex acute, obtuse or bidentate; 1-2-nerved. Lip joined to column for c. 0.1 cm, 3-lobed, cuneate, truncate-emarginate, 0.6 cm long, median with an obscure 3-lobed thickening; free part of hypochile c. 0.42 by 0.38 cm; epichile transversely rectangular, 0.11 by 0.2 cm; spur subglobose, obtuse, c.0.09 cm long. Column short, broad, 0.5-0.3 by 0.2 cm.

Calanthe brassii is easily distinguished from its Papuasian relatives in section Calanthe by the combination of flowers with a short spur and the lip which is almost without callus and free from the column.
