Agrostophyllum kairoanum Ormerod, Orchadian 17 (2011) 35 fig.

Type: A. Kairo 486 (holo A; iso BFC, L, LAE).

Epiphytic herb. Roots terete, fleshy, to 0.2 cm thick. Stems caespitose, leafy throughout, 28.0-32.5 by 0.09 cm at the base, 0.3-0.4 cm wide across sheaths. Leaves erect, linear-ligulate, 2.9-7.2 by 0.2-0.35 cm; leaf sheaths nearly open down to next leaf, 0.7-1.7 cm long, its stipules lanceolate, 0.3-0.6 cm long; apex strongly inequally acutely bidentate, the longer tooth to 0.3 cm long, the shorter tooth 0.05-0.1 cm long. Inflorescence terminal, with numerous bracts and sheaths, with flowers seemingly emerging in pairs, 1.5- 1.8 by 0.7-1 cm wide. Pedicel and ovary terete, c. 0.5 cm long. Median sepal oblong-elliptic, 0.66 by 0.25 cm; apex broadly apiculate; 5-nerved. Lateral sepals obliquely oblong-lanceolate, broadly apiculate, 5-nerved, 0.79 (7.1 mm along 0.) by 29 cm. Petals ligulate-lanceolate, 0.57 by 0.15 cm; apex subacute. Lip 3-lobed, 0.78 cm long; hypochile with rounded-truncate lateral lobes, c. 3.by 1.75 cm; ligula subquadrate, its apex with 2 long, lanceolate cusps; epichile trilobulate, c. 0.35 by 0.6 cm, midlobe ovate, bluntly apiculate, 0.1-0.13 by 0.22 cm. Column slender, 0.35-0.36 cm long, in upper half with 2 short obtuse wings.

Leaves dull dark green; leaf sheaths with black margin. Flowers white.

Disturbed Lithocarpus/ Castanopsis dominated forest. Altitude 1200 m.

Malesia (New Guinea), endemic.

Papua New Guinea (Morobe Province).

Intermediate growing epiphyte.

Agrostophyllum kairoanum is similar to A. militare Ormerod but the lip epichile midlobe is ovate (not transversely rectangular), the ligula is long cuspidate (not short-toothed) and the the substigmatic appendage is situated in the upper half of the column (not in the lower half).
