Liparis graminifolia Ormerod, Orchadian 15 (2008) 563, fig.

Type: L.J. Brass 10926 (holo AMES).

Terrestrial herb. Roots few. Rhizome creeping, terete, elongate, 1.5-2.5 mm thick: internodes 3; Scales 3, inflated, papery (when dry), broadly ovate-lanceolate, 1.6-2.5 cm long; apex acute. Roots wiry , terete. Pseudobulbs enclosed by leaf bases, 2.5-7.0 cm apart, cylindric, with 2-3 internodes, 2- 3-leaved, 0.5-2.0 by 0.15-0.35 cm; basally with a lanceolate, acute sheath to 7 cm long. Leaves thin, linear, 8.9-30.0 by 0.30-0.55 cm; apex with an arista to 0.5 cm long. Inflorescence angular, narrowly winged, 18.8-21.2 cm long; peduncle 9.0- 11.5 cm long; bracts sheathing, 2-3, 0.9-2.5 cm long; rachis sublaxly 13-20-flowered, 9.3-12.2 cm long; floral bracts lanceolate, 0.5-0.9 by 0.2 cm, with acute apex. Median sepal oblong to oblong-lanceolate, 0.83-0.9 by 0.25-0.29 cm; apex acute; 3-nerved. Lateral sepals obliquely oblong, 0.75- 0.9 by 0.3-0.35 cm; apex subacute; 3-nerved. Petals linear, 0.79-0.85 by 0.1 cm; apex obtuse to shortly obtusely biobed. Lip with a subquadrate claw 0.23-0.25 by 0.225-0.295 cm; lamina obcuneate flabellate, including claw 0.7-0.8 by 0.15-0.19 cm at the base, at the apex 0.5- 0.59 cm wide, its upper half with an irregular to suberose margin, with a shallowly emarginate to retuse apex, callus with basal dorsal third united to the column, free part conical, obtuse, ca. 1.8 mm long. Column straight to slightly curved, 0.49-0.52 cm long; narrowly winged, each wing with a median retrorse tooth.


Sepals and petals green,, lip and apex of column darker green.

Secondary forest on a landslip (holotype); shores of a small lake. Altitude 2400-2800 m.

Malesia (New Guinea, endemic).

Indonesia (Papua Province, Jayawijaya Regency); Papua New Guinea (Central Province).

Cool growing epiphyte, requires shade.

Liparis graminifolia is unique in Section Pleiophyllum for the obcuneate-flabellate labellum and a column bearing wings that each have a median retrorse tooth, all other species have an elliptic, suborbicular to transversely elliptic-hexagonal labellum and entire column wings.
