Type: Leiden cult. s.n. (de Vogel, Bandish, Vogel & Gravendeel) s.n. (holo L; iso LAE).

Terrestrial herb up to 35 cm tall. Leaves 3—4, suberect to spreading, very strongly plicate, elliptic-ovate, 15—27 by 6.5—8 cm, with acuminate apex; petiole up to 5 by slender. Inflorescence densely several- flowered, up to 35 cm tall; peduncle 30—40 cm long, densely pubescent, bearing three more or less sheathing, acute to acuminate, suberect scale leaves; floral bracts suberect to spreading, ovate-lanceolate, 0.7—1.4 by 0.3—0.4 cm: apex acute; pubescent. Flowers resupinate, sepals and petals spreading, pubescent on outer surface of sepals. Pedicel-with-ovary 1.2—1.7 cm long, pubescent. Median sepal elliptic, 0.7 by 0.4 cm; apex apiculate. Lateral sepals slightly elliptic-ovate, 0.7 by 0.4 cm; apex apiculate. Petals oblanceolate, 0.5 by 0.2 cm; apex acute; 3-nerved. Lip spreading to deflexed, 3-lobed, 0.6—0.7 by 0.8—0.9 cm; lateral lobes 0.3 by 0.25 cm, spreading, obovate, rounded at apex; midlobe 0.5 by 0.75 cm, broadly obtriangular, bilobulate, each lobule 0.4 cm long; callus small, consisting of 3 tapering lines of warts; spur 0.5 cm long, cylindric, more or less parallel to ovary, pubescent. Column 0.3 cm long, very dilated at apex .

Leaves dark green, paler below. Flowers white with a bright yellow callus, lip turning yellow with age.

Terrestrial in montane open vegetation with isolated remnant trees on ridge. Altitude c. 1500m.

New Guinea (endemic).

Calanthe devogelii differs from the related widespread C. triplicata (Willem.) Ames in being a much smaller plant with much smaller flowers, the sepals, petals and lip scarcely 0.7 cm long at the most and the spur only 0.5 cm long. The sepals and petals are ventrally sparsely pubescent. (after Cribb, Ormerod & Dudley 2011)
