Glomera fuscosetosa

Glomera fuscosetosa Schuit.& de Vogel, Malesian Orchid J. 9 (2012, publ. 2011) 9, fig. 6-9

Type: Leiden cult. 20030209 (E.F. de Vogel & A. Vogel) (holo LAE; iso L)

Stems tufted, slender, erect, densely branching, 9–20 by 0.12 cm across the leaf sheaths; internodes c. 0.37 cm long, somewhat swollen in their apical part. Leaves very fleshy, patent, more or less spreading in one plane with the stem, obliquely ovate 0.45–0.52 by 0.25–0.3 cm; sheaths brown, often slightly shorter than the internodes, c. 0.27 cm long, finely papillose-warty, especially along the somewhat raised veins, the margins at the apex recurved, fringed with up to 0.045 cm long, patent, bristle-like hairs; apex obtuse with strongly unequal halves. Inflorescences very short, 1-flowered; spathe obliquely tubular, c. 0.4 cm long, muricate, rather densely covered with spine-like, somewhat wavy, brown projections with a swollen base. Flower resupinate, opening widely, 1.3 cm across. Pedicel and ovary terete, glabrous 0.4 cm long. Median sepal narrowly ovate, 0.77 by 0.36 cm; apex obtuse, apiculate; 5-nerved. Lateral sepals spreading, obliquely ovate, 0.7 by 0.35 cm; apex obtuse, apiculate; 5-nerved. Petals obovate-spatulate, 0.72 by 0.4 cm; apex rounded; 5-nerved. Lip 0.43 cm long from apex to tip of the spur; blade semi-orbicular-ovate, 0.24 by 0.23 cm; apex rounded; spur conical-cylindrical, obtuse, 0.29 cm long. Column 0.16 cm long; clinandrium laterally on each side with 3 finger-like projections, at the apex 3-lobed; stigma transverse, very narrow. Anther cucullate, subcordate in outline, 0.13 cm wide, smooth; pollinia 0.06 cm long. Fruit not seen.
(after Schuiteman & de Vogel, 2012, publ. 2011)

Hairs on the leaf sheaths dark brown. Flower pure white, lip at apex finely spotted light grey, anther light orange-brown. Slightly fragrant.

  • Genus Glomera
  • Section Uniflorae
  • Species Glomera fuscosetosa

Among the species with short-spurred, white flowers (formerly Section Thylacoglossum of genus Glossorhyncha, now considered a later synonym of Glomera), G. fuscosetosa is probably closest related to G. inconspicua J.J. Sm. This, however, has much smaller flowers, c. 0.6 cm wide, with 3-nerved sepals and petals, almost oblong petals not broader than the sepals, an acute lip, and a relatively longer spur. Two other species in this group possess similar long, patent, bristle-like hairs on the margins of the leaf sheaths. G. nana (Schltr.) J.J. Sm. has much denser foliage with very small leaves (0.3–0.4 by 0.15–0.2 cm), much smaller flowers (sepals 0.35 cm long), and a glabrous spathe. G. pilifera (Schltr.) J.J. Sm., has smaller flowers (Median sepal 0.4 cm long), relatively narrower leaves (0.6–1 by 0.2–0.3 cm), white hairs, a relatively much shorter spur, and a sparsely verrucose, not somewhat densely muricate spathe.
