Type: Kempf s.n. (Kaiser Wilhelmsland, border between German- and English New Guinea) (holo B, lost).

Rhizome very short. Stems crowded, terete, 4-10 cm by 1.5-2 mm, 1-leaved. Leaves erect, ligulate, 4.5-6 by 0.6-0.9 cm, carnose-coriaceous, apex acute. Inflorescences 1-flowered. Pedicel and ovary 0.8 cm long, clavate, sharply triangular in cross section. Flower c. 1 across. Dorsal sepal broadly oblong, 0.6 cm long, apex shortly acuminate to apiculate. Lateral sepals obliquely broadly oblong, mentum spur-like, slightly constricted in the middle, 0.5 cm long, obtuse. Petals linear, slightly dilated at the base, about as long as the sepals, apex acute. Lip 3-lobed, clawed, 0.8 cm long, across the lateral lobes 0.5 cm wide, between the lateral lobes with a transverse thickening provided with two horn-like processes; lateral lobes obliquely triangular, subacute; midlobe broadly reniform with a narrow base, 0.2 by 0.4 cm, apex deeply bilobulate. Column short; column-foot 0.5 cm long, concave, pilose.

Dendrobium kempfianum Ormerod is still only known from the original description. It should be easy to recognise by the two horn-like processes between the lateral lobes of the lip. It is possible, however, that the description in this respect is inaccurate, and that in fact these 'processes' are part of the lateral lobes, in which case Dendrobium kempfianum Ormerod is probably conspecific with Dendrobium quinquelobum (Schltr.) J.J.Sm.
