Basionym: Neottia rubicunda

Terrestrial, erect, robust, c. 60-80 cm high. Rhizome stem-like, decumbent. Roots elongated, flexuose, villose. Stem leafy, terete, glabrous. Leaves erect-patent, obliquely elliptic, acuminate, at the base cuneate, glabrous on both sides, blade 10-15 cm long, near the middle 3.5-5 cm wide, petiole at the base strongly dilated stem cucullate-clasping, 4-6 cm long. Inflorescence glandulose-puberulous, with distant, lanceolate, acuminate scales, rachis densely many-flowered, elongated, up to 20 cm long, 1.5 cm diameter across the flowers. Floral bracts erect-patent, lanceolate, acuminate, glandulose-puberulous, usually somewhat shorter than the flowers, rarely somewhat longer. Flowers erect-patent. Median sepal ovate-lanceolate, obtuse, concave, outside glandulose-puberulous, 0.7 cm long. Lateral sepals patent, at the base ovate-oblong narrowed, falcate, narrowly obtuse, outside glandulose-puberulous, as long as the median sepal. Petals at the base linear-unguiculate, narrowly rhombic-lanceolate, subfalcate-oblique, narrowly obtuse, above the middle in front somewhat dilated, glabrous, along the inner margins adhering to and about as long as the median sepal. Lip erect, apex deflexed, cucullate, when flattened suborbicular, in front produced into a ligulate, obtuse lobe, inside up to above the middle densely covered with filiform appendages, 0.7 cm long, below the middle 0.5 cm wide, apical lobe 0.2 cm long. Column slender, 0.6 cm long, in front obtusely keeled, the sides not winged, glabrous. Anther oblongoid-cucullate, short acuminate, at the base cordate. Ovary subcylindrical, densely glandulose-puberulous with backwards-pointing hairs, c. 1.1 cm long. (After Schlechter, 1911-1914).
