Epiblastus mutabilis is similar to E. kerigomnensis, but differs in the apices of the callus which meet to form a broad V, and are not interposed by a thin median keel (versus apices of the callus separate).

In flowers in which the callus is emarginate and therefore similar to E. unguiculatus, the callus does not reach the lateral lobes.
Epiblastus mutabilis is named-for the two types of callus found in the type specimen (Iatin: mutabilis, changeable).

M.J. Eriks (mss.) intended to name this taxon ''E. major " in her unfinished revision of Epiblastus.
The type of that name was to be NGF 38997 (Ridsdale) (LAE; iso K) from Karkar Island, PNG.
