Dendrobium stenocentrum Schltr. is very similar to Dendrobium rumphiae Rchb.f., and especially to Dendrobium versteegii J.J.Sm. From Dendrobium rumphiae it differs in the not crenulate lateral lobes of the broader lip, and in the colour, while from Dendrobium versteegii J.J.Sm. it differs mainly in that the lip is provided with 3 instead of 5 keels. The differences between these species are very slight, and it appears that only Dendrobium rumphiae and Dendrobium stenocentrum Schltr. can be maintained at species level.
