Dendrobium sleumeri Ormerod is most similar to D. mayandyi Reeve & Renz but differs in the mentum which forms an acute angle with the ovary (versus a right angle, cuneate petals (versus ligulate-oblanceolate) and a lip with a narrower liguliform callus with distinctly separated keels (versus an apically dilated callus in which the keels are fused together and barely discemible).
Dendrobium sleumeri Ormerod is also similar to D. torricellense Schltr., but differs in its narrowly clavate stems (versus terete), shorter peduncle, strongly verrucose ovary, cuneate petals (versus oblanceolate), and lip with a reniform midlobe (versus subquadrate).
The flowers of the type specimen, van Royen & Sleumer 7289, do not seem fully developed so the dimensions of the flower parts are probably larger than those given in the description.
