Type: C. Kalkman 4299 (holo A; iso L).

Epiphytic and terrestrial herb. Rhizome short. Roots terete, 0.1–0.18 cm thick. Stems slender, unbranched, up to 19-leaved, 33.5–55.0 by, 0.15–0.35 cm; internodes 1–2.9 cm long. Leaves thin, lineaer-lanceolate, 9.6–11.8 by 0.45–0.80 cm; leaf sheaths tubular, smooth; apex acute, prominently 3-nerved. Inflorescences appearing on leafless stems, 3–5 (or more)-flowered, to 0.8 cm long; floral bracts ovate-lanceolate, c. 0.22 cm long, with acute apex. Pedicel and ovary subterete-clavate, 2–2.15 cm long. Median sepal ovate, 0.68 by 0.4 cm; apex obtuse; 5-nerved. Lateral sepals obliquely ovate-triangular, 0.7 cm long (along top margin; c. 0.9 cm long along midnerve), 1.5 cm wide at the base, joined at the front for 0.55–0.9 cm; mentum conical, 1.6 cm long, with obtuse apex. Petals oblong; apex obtuse, 0.59 by 0.25 cm; 3-nerved. Lip clawed, not lobed, 1.3–1.4 by c. 0.3 cm (0. 6 cm wide when spread), joined to the column foot for 0.55–0.8 cm to form a tubular nectary, apical half deeply concave-cucullate, truncate (in lateral view); upper side margins dentate; front margins shortly lacerate; apex parallel to base of column. Column short, stout, 0.21–0.22 cm long; lateral margins with a low deltate wing.


Leaf sheaths brown spotted. Flowers with pedicel and ovary and lower half of the flower light purple, bluish, or reddish purple, upper half pale yellow; lip pale yellow.

Common on mossy trunks and terrestrial in primary montane forest. Altitude 1200–1570 m.

Malesia (New Guinea), endemic.

Dendrobium purpureoflavescens is similar to D. D. buffumiae in habit, flower size and colour, and in the lip being shorter than the column, but the the mentum is conical in D. purpureoflavescens (versus elongate cylindrical-conical).
