Dendrobium hooveri is similar to D. agrostophylloides Schltr.in its similar sized flowers, oblong petals with an indistinct lobe on the lower margin and a similarly shaped lip, but differs in the shorter leaves (2.6-5.7 versus. 8-10 cm), a mentum 2x as long (0.65 versus. 0.3 cm) and a lip epichile with a finely papillose-asperate surface (not verruculose).
D. crassinervium J.J.Sm. differs from Dendrobium hooveri in the broader leaves (1.45-1.65 versus 0.2-1 cm), a broader median sepal (0.625 versus 0.45 cm), broader lateral sepals (1.125 versus 0.8 m) and broader petals (0.5 versus 0.34 cm).
