Type: Jongejan cult. 765 (holo L, spirit material).
Synonyms:
Small epiphyte. Roots spreading. Rhizome creeping, 0.1–0.2 cm diam., new shoot from the basal node of the pseudobulb; rhizome scales thin, withering soon. Pseudobulbs 0.1–0.5 cm apart, distinct, ellipsoid to ovoid, 0.6–1.2 by 0.1–0.5 cm, hardly angular. Leaf: petiole 0.01–0.03 cm long; blade elliptic to obovate, 1.2–2.5 by 0.4–0.6 cm, index 2.6–6.4; apex subacute. Inflorescences single or a few together, 4.9–6.3 cm long, 1-flowered; peduncle 3.0–4 0 cm long; scales 3–4; floral bracts 0.25–0.5 cm long. Flowers: pedicel and ovary 0.7–1 cm long; basal node 0.15–2 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal free, recurved, (ovate-)triangular, 0.95–1.3 by 0.15–0.25 cm, index 4.8–6.4; margins entire, ciliolate; surface glabrous; apex acute(-acuminate); 3-nerved. Lateral sepals free, recurved, triangular, 1.2–1,.5 by 0.18–0.27 cm, index 4.8–6.7; margins entire, lower one ciliolate upper one glabrous. Petals porrect, oblong to (ob-)ovate, 0.22–0.32 by 0.08–0.14 cm, index 2.0–3.0; margins entire, ciliolate; surface glabrous; apex obtuse to acute-acuminate; 1–2-nerved. Lip about porrect, ovate; thick and soft, 0.37–0.43 by 0.11–0.19 cm, index 2.2–3.4 (without spreading); margins entire, about glabrous to finely papillose in the basal half (but glabrous close to the base) ; apex rounded; upper side concave in the basal 2/5–1/2, increasingly convex to the top, with two vaguely outlined (minutely) papillose patches towards the margins in the basal half, otherwise glabrous; lower surface with a median furrow along its entire length, otherwise convex, near the base minutely papillose. Column including stelidia 0.15–0.16 cm long; column foot widened to the top, with spreading, rounded lateral teeth; stigma wide-obovate, its base not protruding from the column face; stelidia porrect, narrowly triangular, 0.04–0.06 cm long, acute; pollinia 4, the inner two more than half as long as the outer.

Bulbophyllum orthoraphe J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel belongs in series B.
Bulbophyllum orthoraphe J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel shares the clustered growth and a lip which is blunt at the top and without sharply outlined patches of papillae or hairs with Bulbophyllum dischorense Schltr. and B. muriceum Schltr., from both it differs in the oblong petals (versus petals triangular) and by the straight stelidia (versus stelidia sigmoid).
Bulbophyllum orthoraphe differs from B. meliphagirostrum Van Royen in the wider lip (without spreading index 2.2–3.4 versus 5–8) and by the shorter petals (0.22–0.32 cm long versus 0.4–0.5 cm long).
