Bulbophyllum najae J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel, Males. Orchid J. 21 (2018) 37
Type: Jongejan cult. 380 (holo L)
Synonyms:
Epiphytes. Rhizome 0.6–0.8 cm diam.; rhizome scale leaves not long persistent, with few fibers remaining. Pseudobulbs c. 1 cm apart, distinct, erect, ellipsoid to ovoid, 2.6–3.5 by 1.6–1.9 cm, rounded in section, with age wrinkling along numerous longitudinal grooves. Leaf petiole 2.0–2.8 cm long; blade elliptic, 9.0–21.5 by 3.0–5.4 cm, index 3.0–6.2; apex acuminate. Inflorescences 5–6 cm long, solitary to few in a fascicle, 1-flowered; peduncle 1.8–2.0 cm long; scale leaves c. 3, the longest 0.8–1.05 cm long; floral bracts 0.75–1.15 cm long. Pedicel and ovary 1.6–2.7 cm long; basal node 0.25–0.4 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal adherent to the laterals near the base only, c. porrect to somewhat recurved, elliptic to obovate-oblong, 1.08–1.8 by 0.61–1.16 cm, index 1.2–1.8, thick, very thick towards the apex; margins entire; apex obtuse to acute-acuminate; glabrous; 3–7-nerved. Lateral sepals as the median sepal but slightly oblique, adnate along their lower margins at their base only, elliptic-oblong to obovate-oblong, 1.6–2.2 by 0.7–1.1 cm, index 1.8–2.3; apex rounded to acute. Petals close to their base adnate to the column (as well as along the upper margin, towards the base), porrect, elliptic to obovate, 0.38–0.5 by 0.12–0.14 cm, index 3.1–4.2, rather thin; margins entire; apex acute(-acuminate); glabrous to minutely papillose towards the apex, surface glabrous or on upper side minutely papillose towards the apex; 1-nerved. Lip slightly recurved beyond halfway, ovate-oblong in outline, 0.35–0.45 by 0.18–0.26 cm, index 1.7–2.1 (without spreading); margins entire; apex obtuse to subacute; glabrous, thick; above c. flat near the base, with 2 low, rounded ridges which gradually emerge in the basal half of the lip, and then gradually converge, leaving a shallowly concave area, with or without a short, low, rounded third ridge in between, up to just short of the apex, where they merge into the convex apical part of the lip; below with a median ridge along most of the length of the lip, with a narrow, shallow median groove. Column including stelidia 0.3–0.45 cm long; column foot not widened; stigma elliptic; stelidia porrect, triangular, 0.18–0.2 cm long, with acute apex; upper margin near the base with or without a slight, deltoid, rounded tooth; anther with a rounded ridge, front drawn-out into a rather thick, concave, ovate, subtruncate beak, the surface minutely papillose; pollinia 4, of c. equal length.
(after Vermeulen, Schuiteman & de Vogel 2018)
Sepals on upper side shiny, yellow to cream-colored to pale pink, somewhat green towards the apex; the median on upper side somewhat purple near the apex or not; the laterals on upper side densely and rather finely spotted with red towards the base, or on upper side entirely dark red-purple Petals white to yellow-green. Lip towards the base white, towards the apex yellow, upper surface minutely spotted red; or lip purple with or without white margins. Column yellow-green

Bulbophyllum najae is similar to Bulbophyllum maxillarioides Schltr. and Bulbophyllum rhomboglossum Schltr. in the shiny sepals which are at the base adherent or adnate, it differs from Bulbophyllum maxillarioides in the glabrous margins of the lip (not ciliolate), and from Bulbophyllum rhomboglossum in the wider sepals (median sepal 0.85–1.16 versus 0.5–0.6 cm wide; lateral sepals 0.7–1.1 versus 0.52–0.62 cm wide).
