Type: Goetghebeur & Coppejans 3782 (holo L 0738050; iso L (spirit material), GENT (herbarium and spirit material).

Medium-size epiphyte with patent, branched rhizomes. Rhizome c. 0.3 cm diam., new shoot from the basal node of the pseudobulb; rhizome scales thin, leaving parts of the rhizome bare, rather long persistent. Pseudobulbs distinct, c. 2.5 cm apart, cylindrical, 2.4–3.0 by 0.3–0.4 cm. Leaf: petiole 0.2—0.5 cm long; blade elliptic to ovate, 4.4–5.2 by 0.6–1.0 cm, index 4.9–7.4; apex acute. Inflorescences single or few together from nodes along the rhizome, 2.9—3.3 cm long, 1-flowered; peduncle 0.9–1.1 cm long; scales 3; floral bracts 0.5–0.55 cm long. Flowers: pedicel and ovary 0.9–1 cm long; basal node 0.3–0.35 cm above the floral bract attachment. Median sepal free, recurved, elliptic, c. 1.12 by 0.3 cm, index 3.7–3.8; margins entire, in the top half ciliolate; surface glabrous; apex acuminate; 5-nerved. Lateral sepals free, recurved, ovate, c. 1.15 by 0.35 cm, index 3.2–3.3; margins entire, upper margin glabrous, in the top half ciliolate; surface glabrous; apex acuminate; 5-nerved. Petals porrect, elliptic-ovate, c. 0.5 by 0.25 cm, index c. 2; margins entire, upper papillose, lower ciliolate; apex acute-acuminate; surface glabrous; 1-nerved. Lip recurved in the basal half, very thick, ovate-oblong, c. 0.62 by 0.22 cm, index 2.8—2.9 (without spreading); margins entire, slightly and minutely papillose near the base; surface glabrous; apex rounded; upper side close to the base concave and with two short, narrow ridges which start near the margins and then converge, leaving a wide gap in between, surface elsewhere convex; underside convex with a deep median furrow. Column including stelidia c. 0.25 cm long; column foot at the top widened, triangular, with small, patent, obtuse lateral lobes near the apex; stigma elliptic, with a protruding callus just below it; stelidia slightly sigmoid, triangular-subulate, c. 0.17 cm long, acute.

Bulbophyllum gymnothema J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel belongs in series C.

Within series C, Bulbophyllum gymnothema J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel shares the partly bare rhizome (not entirely covered by scales) with Bulbophyllum nudicaule J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel and B. tricaudatum J.J. Verm.

Bulbophyllum gymnothema J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel differs from the Bulbophyllum nudicaule J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel in the narrower sepals (median sepal index 3.7–3.8 versus 1.5–2.1) and in the almost glabrous lip with only slightly and minutely papillose margins towards its base (versus lip coarsely papillose except near apex).

Bulbophyllum gymnothema J.J.Verm., Schuit. & de Vogel differs from Bulbophyllum tricaudatum J.J. Verm. in the ovate-oblong lip (versus lip divided into an obovate-oblong, wide basal part and a linear, narrow apical part).
