Synonyms:

Epiphytes, lithophytes, or terrestrials herbaceous. Roots glabrous. Rhizome creeping. Stems caespitose or spaced, cane-like, leafy, or pseudobulb-like and completely covered by persistent leaf-sheaths (e.g. Earina valida Rchb.f., not in New Guinea). Leaves many, duplicate, distichous; leaf sheaths tubular or imbricate, often deeply split, in Agrostophyllum usually with blackish margins, sometimes with 2 acicular to filiform appendages; leaf blade articulate. Inflorescence terminal, rarely lateral, 1- to many­flowered, fascicled into a globose capitulum, racemose or paniculate. Flowers resupinate or not, not showy, white, greenish-white or yellow, sometimes self-pollinating. Sepals free. Lip immobile, entire or 3-lobed, often saccate at the base, lateral margins of hypochile (when present) sometimes adnate to the column foot, the rim connecting the lobes of the hypochile often with a callus, or disc ecallose. Column with or without stelidia, column foot rudimentary or absent; anther erect or incumbent, ellipsoid to ovate; pollinia 4 or 8, club-shaped; stigma concave; rostellum triangular, erect to suberect, its remnant after removal of pollinia notched to obtuse; viscidium solitary.
