Sympodial epiphytic plants. Pseudobulbs consisting of one internode, either clustered and often elongated with a more or less abruptly swollen basal part, or spaced along an elongate, creeping or pendulous rhizome, 1-leaved at the apex . Leaves glabrous, dorso-ventrally flattened, articulate, duplicate, leathery; base without leafsheath. Inflorescence 1-flowered, terminal, often in fascicles from the apex of the pseudobulb, from a bilaterally flattened, long-persistent, yellow spathe, Flowers medium-sized to large, resupinate, mobile, lasting less than 1 day or rarely lasting a few days, in most species with white sepals or petals which often turni reddish-purple when they start wilting, but also with various other colours. Sepals free; mentum chin-like. Lip mobile on the apex of the column foot, entire or 3-lobed, without spur; at least the hypochile with swollen keels. Column-foot present. Pollinia 4, solid-waxy, caudicles absent, stipe absent, viscidium absent.

Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Solomon islands, east to Samoa. About 90 species; in New Guinea 77 species.

Epiphytes in lowland and montane forest, predominantly below 2000 m.

Dendrobium section Diplocaulobium is a fairly uniform section with 1-leaved, often bottle shaped pseudobulbs carrying 1-flowered inflorescences at their apex. The usually short-lived flowers are mainly white (often turning reddish-purple when they start wilting), with mostly very narrow, pointed sepals and petals. A few species deviate in that they have more substantial flowers with attractive colours, such as Dendrobium regale Schltr., Dendrobium auricolor J.J.Sm. and Dendrobium centrale J.J.Sm.. These rank among the finest orchids of New Guinea.

Dendrobium section Diplocaulobium contains c. 101 species, in New Guinea c. 88 species:
