Usually epiphytes. Roots glabrous. Rhizomes short. Stems or pseudobulbs usually cane-like, rather short to much elongated, branching or not, fleshy or rarely wiry, more or less distinctly fleshy, often pendulous, many-leaved, less often with distinct, ovoid to fusiform, 1- to few-leaved pseudobulbs. Leaves usually short-lived, glabrous (very rarely hairy, not in New Guinea); leaf sheath tubular or absent. Inflorescences racemose or 1-flowered, usually short, when elongate pendulous, most often lateral or apical on the the upper part of the leafless stem of the previous year, or less often on the leafy stems. Flowers medium-sized to large, often showy, resupinate, long-lived, showy. Sepals not connate ; mentum relatively short, sac-like, chin-like or less often narrowly conical. Lip not mobile, often with its basal part clasping the column, usually rigidly attached to the apex of the column foot but not adnate to it, entire or weakly lobed, often darker coloured in the centre, often densely and finely pubescent, often with finely fringed margins, without keels or sometimes with a single callus or with a single longitudinal keel; base often claw-like, linear.

This section, which has yielded so many magnificent orchids in the hills and mountains of tropical continental Asia (D. nobile, D. devonianum, D. parishii, to name a few), is very poorly represented in New Guinea, only two species being known: the widespread and rather attractive Dendrobium anosmum and the endemic but fairly insignificant Dendrobium vesiculosum.
